Everything You Wanted to Know about Commode Stools

A living space should be made adaptable to ease our daily lifestyle. For people with dependencies, like senior citizens, it’s important that they are properly equipped to deal with decreasing mobility. All the necessary equipment that helps elderly people to lead a normal or near-normal lifestyle should be kept in their vicinity. A commode stool, needless to say, is one such equipment.
Commode chairs are increasingly being used by people who are incapacitated to walk on their own. These are affordable and comfortable equipment and more aged people are opting for them.
What is a commode stool?
Commode stools are mobile toilets that are usually placed in the room and are used by people who can’t walk the distance to the bathroom because of a frailty or other diseases. The waste container is attached to the stool. It’s removable and can be cleaned easily.
Why are commode stools important?
A commode stool is important because of the following reasons.
1. Autonomy
Hygiene and safety can’t be compromised, irrespective of the health condition of a person. A commode chair or stool helps an individual to go to the bathroom sans any assistance. Such equipment lends discretion and greater independence to the user.
2. Privacy
This is perhaps the most important reason why commode chairs are of immense help. It ensures privacy to people who are dependent on their family members for their biological need. Calling someone to take him/her to the toilet is a bothersome issue. In most cases, the helper has to wait outside the bathroom. A commode chair, however, alleviates the need of a helper to answer nature’s calls.
3. Safety
A commode chair has support bars on both sides that keep the user protected from any risks that may arise from using the equipment alone. Safety is a major issue for people incapable of moving freely even in their own house. Commode chairs lessen the chances of suffering an injury particularly while going to the bathroom at night.
4. Moveable
Commode stools are portable. They can be taken to places. A commode wheelchair can be folded and easily packed into a car. It becomes easier for senior citizens and those facing temporary mobility issues to take a trip outside their house.
Here are some of the common types of commode stools.
1. Portable stools
A portable commode chair can be folded and carried almost everywhere without any problem. These days a wheelchair with commode seat has become common. They can be accommodated anywhere and require little space to carry.
2. Static stools
A static commode stool, as the name suggests, has no wheels. They usually come with detachable arms to aid in transportation. Static commode stools are used by people who are not entirely immobile and are usually cheaper than those that have wheels. They are available in a number of sizes.
3. Bariatric stools
A bariatric stool is more durable than typical commode chairs. Bariatric commode stools can accommodate weights up to 275kg. They are wider and often used by obese people with mobility problems. These have enough space for the user to sit comfortably.
